Choosing a Drainage Contractor

We are frequently contacted by homeowners and property management companies that have hired another drainage contractor to solve their drainage problems; but afterwards, the problem persists and they feel they’ve “thrown money down the drain.”

So how does one know they are hiring a drainage contractor that will do the job right, for a reasonable cost?  We suggest that you write a checklist of the qualifications that are important to you and use this list as you contact drainage solutions companies.  Possible items to include:

  • Number of years in business
  • Is drainage a sideline or a specialty of the company?  Many landscaping, sprinkler, and foundation companies do drainage as a side business, but they do not specialize in it.
  • Does the contractor seem well versed in his field?
  • Did the contractor take measurements for distance and elevation? Many times those measurements are crucial in determining the design of the drainage solution.
  • Did you receive a detailed written description of the scope of the work with the bid?  Was a drawing included? The old saying, “The devil is in the details” is true.  As you know, your hard earned money is at stake. If the drainage contractor hasn’t detailed your drainage repair to you, then that may be a sign that he isn’t going to do a detailed job in installing the system.
  • Always call several references on the contractor’s list.  Obviously, he isn’t going to give you names of customers that weren’t pleased with his work, but at least you can get a feel for the quality of work he does.
  • Do you feel comfortable with the company?  Have they listened to your concerns and promptly responded to you?
